3 -examples from the Old Testament (Wisdom Books and Major Prophets)

  6. Isaiah 16:14 But now the LORD says: "Within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them, Moab's splendor and all her many people will be despised, and her survivors will be very few and feeble."

  10. Daniel 3:23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. Dan_3:24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, Your Majesty."

3 - examples from the Old Testament (Daniel Amos Jonah)

 




  1. Three times daily Daniel prayed in Daniel 6:10, 13 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Dan_6:13 Then they said to the king, "Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day."
  2. Three weeeks Daniel mourned in Daniel 10:2, 3 At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.
  3. Three kings prophesied in Daniel 11:2 Now then, I tell you the truth: Three more kings will arise in Persia, and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others. When he has gained power by his wealth, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.

  9. Three days and three nights, the time Jonah was in the huge fish, Jonah 1:17 Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
  10. Three days - the time it took to go round Ninevaeh, Jonah 3:3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it.

3 - even more examples again from the Old Testament

 

  1. Three sons of Jesse's sister Zeruiah (Abishai, Joab and Asahel). 1 Chronicles 2:16
  2. Three sons of Benjamin (Bela, Beker and Jediael). 1 Chronicles 7:6
  3. Three sons of Saul who all died together 1 Chronicles 10:6.
  4. Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. They broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David who refused to drink it, pouring it out to the LORD. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors. Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three and was doubly honoured above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them. 1 Chroonicles 12:15-25
  5. Three months is the length of time the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house leading to blessing. 1 Chronciles 13:14
  6. Three options are the mumber given to David when God punished him for numbering the people -he was told to choose one of them - three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD - days of plague in the land, with the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel. He chose the third. 1 Chronicles 21
  7. Three daughters is the number of daughters born to Heman 1 Chronicles 25:5
  8. Three days was the length of the fast for Esther before she went in to the king to make her request for her people Esther 4:16
  9. Three is the number of daughters Job had at the beginning of his story Job 1:1
  10. Three is the number of daughters more he is given at the end (Keziah, Jemimah and Keren-Happuch) Job 42:13

3 - even more examples from the Old Testament

 


  1. Three times a year was the number of times Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense before the LORD along with them, and so fulfilling his temple obligations. 1 kings 9:25
  2. Three years was the time between each return of Solomon's fleet of trading ships carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons. 1 Kings 10:22
  3. Three days is the length of time Rehoboam gave himself to respond to the people who wanted to know his future policy 1 Kings 12:5, 12
  4. Three years is the length of time Abijah reigned in Jerusalem 1 Kings 15:2
  5. Three times is the number of time Elijah stretched himself out on the dead boy to raise him to life 1 Kings 17:21
  6. Three days is the length of time the fifty looked for Elijah after he was take up to heaven 2 Kings 2:17
  7. Three times is the number of times King Jehoash struck the ground with the arrows just before Elisha died, meaning only three victories over Aram 2 Kings 13:18, 19, 25
  8. Three years is the length of time Jehoiakim was vassal to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon after he invaded the land before Jehoiakim rebelled. 2 Kings 24:1
  9. Three months is the length of time Jehoiachin reigned in Jerusalem 2 Kings 24:8
  10. Three is the number of sons born to Judah by a Canaanite woman, who was daughter to Shua. Their names - Er, Onan and Shelah. 1 Chronicles 1:24

3 - some more examples from the Old Testament

  1. Three days is the length of time after making the treaty with the Gibeonites that the Israelites heard that they were neighbours, living near them. (Joshua 9:16)
  2. Three sons is the number of sons of Anak the giant in Hebron driven out by Caleb - Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai (Joshua 15:14, Judges 1:20)
  3. Three men from each tribe were sent to make a survey of the land and write a description of it, according to the inheritance of each (Joshua 18:4)
  4. Three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars, under Gideon, grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow and shouting, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!" (Judges 7:20)
  5. Three men it is said will meet the newly anointed Saul at the great tree of Tabor, he is told. Going up to worship God at Bethel, one would be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. (1 Samuel 10:3)
  6. Three arrows are the number David says he will shoot when arranging things with Jonathan 1Sa_20:20
  7. Three times is the number of times David bowed down before Jonathan, with his face to the ground as they kissed each other and wept together before parting (1 Samuel 20:41)
  8. Three is the number of David's special warriors: Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite and Shammah, the son of Agee the Harʹarite (2 Samuel 23)
  9. Three months is the length of time the ark remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite (2 Samuel 6:11)
  10. Three options is the number given by God to David in  through Gad - three years of famine or three months of fleeing from his enemies while they pursue him or three days of plague in his land (2 Samuel 24)
(Also three divisions is the number into which Saul separated his men when attacking the Ammonites and slaughtering them, 1 Samuel 11:11)

3 - some examples from the Old Testament




  1. Three men (or angels or whatever) meet Abraham in Genesis 18
  2. Three is prominent in the dreams of the chief baker and cupbearer to Pharaoh interpreted by Joseph. The cupbearer dreams of a vine with three branches on it signifying three days, the time in which Pharaoh would lift up his head and restore him to his position. The baker dreams of three baskets of bread, again standing for three days, the time in which Pharaoh would lift off his head and impale his body on a pole. (Genesis 40)
  3. Thee days is the lengh of time Joseph imprisons his brothers in Egypt (Genesis 42:17)
  4. Three months was Moses' age when his parents hid him (Exodus 2:2)
  5. Three days is the length of time the plague of darkness lasted (Exodus 10:22, 23)
  6. Three things that must be provided - (Exodus 21:11)
  7. Three times a year Jewish men were to cebrate festivals to God at the Temple (Exodus 23:14, 17, 34:23, 24)
  8. Three years is the length of time a tree was to be considered forbidden on entering the Promised Land (Leviticus 19:23)
  9. Three times is the number of times Balaam beat his donkey when it refused to move (Numbers 22)
  10. Three years was the gap between each gathering of tithes in ancient Israel (Deuteronomy 4:28)

3 - some more examples from the New Testament

1. Three times is the number of times Peter saw the vision of the animals (Acts 10:16, etc)
2. Three days is the period Paul was blind after his conversion (Acts 9)
3. Three months is the period Paul preached fearlessly in Ephesus (Acts 19:8)
4. Three months is the period Paul spent in Greece after leaving Ephesus (Acts 19:3)
5. Three months is also the period Paul stayed in Malta en route to Rome (Acts 28:11)
6. Three days is the time Paul spent in Syracuse en route to Rome (Acts 28:12)
7. Three shipwrecks were part of the sufferings of the Apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 11:28)
8. Three times Paul prayed for the “thorn in the flesh” to be removed (2 Corinthians 12:7, 8)
9. Three years is the time Paul spent in Arabia (Galatians 1:18)
10. Three virtues remain (1 Corinthians 13:1)
(Also there are three gates on each side of the heavenly Jerusalem (Revelation). Note too that God is a Trinity and is referred to as the one the one who is, who was and who will be (Revelaion 1:8). Also, the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2)

3 - some examples from the New Testament


1. Three months is the period Mary stayed with her relative before John and Jesus were born (Luke 1:56)
2. Three gifts were given to Jesus by the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12)
3. Three days is the time it took for Jesus's parents to find him again after losing him in Jerusalem (Luke 2:46)
4. Three temptations came to Christ in the wilderness each answered with a Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11, etc)
6. Three years is probably the period of Jesus's ministry. This is the period mentioned in the parable of the unfruitful fig tree (Luke 13:3)
7. Three shelters is the number of shelters Peter planned erecting on the mount of transfiguration (Matthew 17:4, etc)
8. Three times is the number of times Peter denied his Lord as predicted and as echoed in his later restoration (John 18, etc)
9. Three crosses were used to crucify Jesus and the criminals either side of him (Matthew 27:38, etc)
10. Three days and three nights* is the period that Jesus was in the tomb as prophesied (Matthew 12:40, 25:81, 27:40, 63, etc)
(Also, three witnesses are mentioned by Jesus in connection with meeting in his name (Matthew 18:18, 20)

*The expression does not mean 72 hours but a whole day and night plus parts of the others before and after
